Free online tool helps Welsh companies tackle waste and reduce costs

Envirowise Wales has launched a new web-based waste calculator to help firms make cost savings through reducing waste and improving resource efficiency - potentially as much as £1,000 per employee.

Available at the Wales Indicator page, the tool guides companies through a step-by-step process to tackle their waste and maximise profit, from identifying priorities to developing an action plan. By inputting data on existing practices, users can access information on where the biggest priorities - and the greatest opportunities for savings lie - together with an estimate of the amount of money which their business could save.

The tool also provides guidance on how to collect accurate data on waste and resource use, together with tips for ongoing monitoring and advice on communicating the benefits of resource efficiency to employees and senior management.

Tim Lineham, Programme Manager for Envirowise Wales said: "With the tough economic climate driving businesses to search for ever greater efficiencies, this tool will prove invaluable for Welsh companies seeking effective ways to deal with the rising cost of waste and resources.

"Tackling this area can seem daunting, but low-cost and no-cost changes can generate fast results. Our new tool therefore sets out the steps involved in an accessible and concise way, providing plenty of advice and practical tips along the way. It's a great opportunity to find out how to take the next step on the road to better resource efficiency - and boost the bottom line in the process."

Businesses in Wales with over 50 employees who send over 50 tonnes of waste to landfill, or who use materials to manufacture products, for packaging or to provide hospitality services including retail food outlets, can get tailored support from Envirowise to improve their resource efficiency, competitiveness, and reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.

This free, confidential and independent service is available from a network of regional managers and includes site visits, regional clubs, specialist consultancy and help developing action plans and monitoring progress.
