You can even put your new ideas into a strategy by implementing an Environmental Management System for your company. These can be used towards more formal accreditations, such as ISO140001.

TOP TIPS

See below for some low cost – no cost tips to help you become more resource efficient and reduce costs.

  • Buy remanufactured toner cartridges - high quality cartridges are available with the same performance as new cartridges at a lower price.
  • When heating, reduce the temperature of a room by one degree; it is unlikely that anyone will notice and you could cut the heating bill by as much as 10%.
  • Water butts can be installed around properties to collect rainwater for garden watering.
  • Ensure printers are set to print double-sided and fax machines are set so they do not produce unwanted header or report sheets.
  • Get into the habit of reading meters regularly and plotting readings. This may help to identify any leaks.
  • Look at the quantities or raw ingredients that you are ordering. Make sure that you are not over ordering – which could indicate a fault in your process flow.
  • Occupancy-linked controls can save up to 30% of your electricity bill by switching off non-essential items and lights when a room is empty.
  • Fit a water displacement device such as a cistern bag supplied free of charge by most water companies or simply a 1-litre plastic bottle filled with water, in toilet cisterns to reduce the amount of water per flush.
  • Leaving the coffee machine on can cost around £1,000/year. Switch it off when not required or prepare coffee in kettles and serve in cafeterias.
