Adrian Cole
Operations Director
Envirowise
Adrian Cole

Adrian Cole has responsibility for the delivery of Envirowise services that help industry and commerce become more resource efficient and make environmental improvements. He has developed many of the sector approaches adopted by the programme and liaises with other delivery bodies to ensure that business users can benefit from the full range of support available to them.

Adrian qualified as a research physicist working on energy technologies. He managed the UK's early work on solar energy-based renewable energy systems before moving into environmental expertise. He is experienced in how businesses can adopt new approaches to improve their systems and operations.

Gregor Pennie
Envirowise Representative
Gregor Pennie

Gregor is a Director of Enviromentor Ltd. Since 1995, he has worked extensively as an adviser and consultant to Envirowise and has provided high-level support to this key government programme throughout the UK. Support has included writing good practice guides and case studies, and delivering environmental training workshops for regulators, intermediaries and businesses. Topics have included waste minimisation, water minimisation, environmental awareness, environmental management systems, legislative compliance, supply chain partnerships and sustainability strategies for companies.

Mark Shayler
Envirowise Representative
Mark Shayler

Mark Shayler has 15 years experience in resource efficiency and ecodesign. He has been an Envirowise advisor for 4 years and prior to that sat on the Envirowise management advisory committee for 6 years.

After working at the coalface (not literally) with SMEs for 8 years Mark spent an unforgettable period as Environment Manager at ASDA-Walmart.

Mark is Managing Director of eco3, a specialist ecodesign and environmental consultancy. He is a Technical Advisor for the DTI's Waste Resources Action Programme, has published widely on business and environment issues and has directly advised in excess of 800 businesses.

He provided on-screen expertise for the Channel Four programme "The Insider" which looked at over-packaging and he has also provided expertise on clean design and environmental issues for Radio Four's 'You and Yours' and Radio Five Live.

Katie Challenor
Envirowise Representative
Katie Challenor

Katie has over ten years experience in the environmental field, with particular expertise in water management, resource efficiency and IPPC. She is a Senior Environmental Scientist of Ashact, a Division of Hyder Consulting Ltd, and has worked on the Envirowise programme for nine years.

Katie has prepared material for a number of Envirowise publications including Good Practice Guides, Case Studies and fact sheets and has been an advisor on the Envirowise Advice Line for three years.

Much of her experience comes from working in the food and drink industry, retail, hospitality and other commercial sectors where she has undertaken waste and water audits, environmental reviews, effluent monitoring programmes and prepared a number of IPPC permit applications.

Kathryn Mintoft
Barclays
Kathryn Mintoft

Kathryn Mintoft is Senior Environmental Sustainability Manager at Barclays with over five years of experience as an environmental professional. Her role is to reduce the environmental impact that Barclays has through its 3,500 offices and branches worldwide. Kathryn’s work includes implementing Barclays Climate Action Programme, which focuses on driving energy-efficiency, buying renewable energy and offsetting the remainder of carbon dioxide emissions. Kathryn is also responsible for improving environmental sustainability in Barclays supply chain. Barclays were winners of Business in the Community’s Award for Environmental Excellence in 2007.

Ian Barnes
The Boots UK Limited
Ian Barnes

Ian Barnes, Sustainable Development Manager (Waste Minimisation, Recycling and Transport) is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental legislation across the Boots UK Limited and the Republic of Ireland.

Ian’s key waste accountabilities include:-

  • the management of disposal and recycling processes and contracts to reduce environmental impacts and optimising cost/ revenue
  • leading a cross functional team to ensure that the business considers environmental impacts during the design of transit packaging and in store advertising material and display fittings.
  • Managing compliance obligations under UK and ROI packaging legislation - Ian was actively involved in the consultation process and implementation of the WEEE Regulations in the Republic of Ireland.

Ian also works with both local and national charities as part of the Boots Charitable Trust (a registered charity). The charities benefit from healthcare and personal care products that for cosmetic reasons cannot be sold in Boots stores.

Ian has worked for Boots for 28 years and has worked extensively in Retail Stores and Logistics Operations. Since 1998 he has held a number of Health Safety and Environment roles within Boots. Ian also sits on the British Retail Consortium Waste Working Group and is a Chartered Waste Manager.

John Barraclough
Advantage West Midlands

John Barraclough is the Sustainable Business Policy Manager for Advantage West Midlands, taking the lead on ensuring that businesses become more sustainable by mainstreaming environmental and social issues into their business processes. John is also acting as Interim Head of Environment for Business Link in the West Midlands and is currently working on the development of an environmental and resource efficiency advisory service for the region.

Prior to this John spent three years as the Regional Manager for Envirowise in the West Midlands Region and has also spent time providing direct practical environmental advice and support to businesses whilst working for Groundwork West Midlands EBS. John has also spent 15 years working in technical laboratory roles within the food and drink industry where he was responsible for the management and monitoring of environmental impacts.

John has a wide knowledge of environmental issues including sustainable development, climate change, resource efficiency, environmental management systems, legal compliance and pollution prevention.
