Retail Supply Chain Distributes Cost Savings from Improved Packaging - CS332

First published March 2002.

This Case Study demonstrates the value of reviewing the packaging and handling of goods. This publication describes how the companies involved in the retail supply chain worked together for mutual benefit. During the trial period, the benefits of introducing the tote box were spread across the retail supply chain and included the elimination of the need for 21720 cardboard cartons, with annual savings of £7000 and 15 tonnes of waste. The pilot scheme also found that there was an estimated 95% reduction in paper packaging which had been used as in-fill. In addition, there was a reduction in the amount of stock that was damaged during handling and transportation.
