This Case Study illustrates the significant cost and environmental benefits that can be achieved by extending waste minimisation initiatives to a company’s supply chain. Allied Distillers Ltd, after several years of implementing a waste minimisation programme on its own sites, recently involved seven key suppliers in a similar initiative to encourage resource efficiency. Training workshops and waste audits were followed by on-site implementation and advice from independent consultants. Benefits from the initiative include cost savings of £1.2 million/year, significant reductions in water use and in effluent and solid waste generation, and substantial energy savings.
