The UK paper and board industry uses 180 million m3 of water - 30 m3 per dry tonne of product - and produces 163 million m3 of effluent every year. This Guide has been produced to help paper mills reach a fuller understanding of the costs inherent in their current level of water use and to assess the scope for cost savings arising from water use minimisation measures. It is based on data provided by The Paper Federation of Great Britain and provides information on water sources and discharge routes; rates of specific water consumption and how they vary between different product manufacturers; the costs of water supply and effluent discharge; good practices commonly adopted to control water use; and the barriers to further improvement. The Guide provides the foundation for later good practice guidance to lead to further cost savings.
