Fairmont, St Andrews Wins Top Green Award
Fairmont, St Andrews last night (Friday, November 17th) received a prestigious award from Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander MP for its outstanding commitment to minimising the hotel's impact on the planet.
The award for Outstanding Achievement in Resource Efficiency, sponsored by Envirowise, was presented at the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) Gala Awards ceremony.
The ceremony saw 700 guests packed into Glasgow's Hilton Hotel for this year's Brazilian-themed event which was hosted by Carol Smillie, with entertainment from actress, comedienne and writer, Maureen Lipman CBE.
The iconic hotel, formerly known as St Andrews Bay, has invested in a comprehensive environmental management programme to minimise waste and reduce raw material consumption, including energy. £220,000 efficiency savings have been achieved to date, with an additional £187,000 of potential savings identified; all resulting in huge environmental benefits.
Projects undertaken include engaging in a supply chain partnership project, use of cooking oil for bio diesel for site vehicles, removal of organic waste via biodigestor and onsite composting, rainwater harvesting, and the installation of a combined heat and power unit.
Accepting the award, Jonathan Titterton, Director of Facilities at the Fairmont Hotel, St Andrews said:
"We are delighted that all of our efforts at Fairmont, St Andrews have been recognised, and we hope will motivate other hotels to put the environment at the forefront of their minds. We are honoured to accept this award from SCDI."
Alan Hendry, Envirowise Business Manager for Scotland, said:
"It is always a pleasure to award those organisations who embrace such a positive environmental approach to their operations. Working with the Fairmont's supply chain has been instrumental in the project's success.
"The company is well on its way to achieving its zero to landfill target, and we hope that the benefits achieved by Fairmont will encourage more companies to follow in their footsteps."
Principal partner for the SCDI Gala Awards, Scotland's leading business awards dinner, was The Royal Bank of Scotland, with associate partners Envirowise, Gillespie Macandrew and Pfizer.
